Founded in 1838 by the Wheaton brothers, the city was incorporated in 1890. In fact, the prairie-style homes of many original inhabitants, including the Wheaton brothers, still stand today. As the county seat, Wheaton has a lively downtown district famous for its iconic ‘French Market’, upscale shops, acclaimed restaurants and public parks offering a wide variety of artistic and community events year-round. Wheaton is also home to Wheaton College, founded in 1860, and regarded by some as the "Harvard of Christian colleges".
