Welcome to St. Charles

Situated along the Fox River, which inspired the city's slogan, "Pride of the Fox", St. Charles is steeped in history. Originally the home of the Pottawatomie Native American tribe, St. Charles was first ‘settled’ by colonial Americans in 1833. Later, it was known to have provided several “stations” along the Underground Railroad between the 1840’s to 1860’s. In modern times, St. Charles has retained its historic character while appealing to those looking for an active, lively community. The Chicago Tribune has named downtown St. Charles as one of the regions “Top 10 Downtown Areas” for its unique shopping, dining and entertainment offerings. In 2011, St. Charles was named “#1 in Best Towns and Cities for Families” by Family Circle magazine.
