Spring Curb Appeal 101

Although Glen Ellyn doesn’t bestow a “Yard of the Month” award, many of the homes in our town would be worthy of this honor. Here’s how to use some of their secrets, especially when you are getting your home ready to sell!
 
 

First Impressions Count

  • Complete a Spring yard cleanup including raking leaves, weeds and debris off the lawn, out of planting beds and from under trees. Keep the lawn mowed and neatly edged.
  • Power wash any areas of your home’s exterior that are looking a little worse for wear. Siding and brick exteriors, walkways, driveways and sidewalks can all be returned to their sparkling clean states with this handy power tool. Don’t forget your front stoop or porch and fence.
  • Ensure your gutters are cleaned out and neatly hung. Trim trees and shrubs, especially those that are near windows or the roof.
  • Let those windows shine! A solution of water, white vinegar and a few drops of your favorite essential oil will do the trick. Use newspaper in lieu of paper towels for a lint-free finish. Add Some Pizzazz!

  • Consider a fresh coat of glossy paint for your front door - white, red and black are popular colors but an unexpected punch of color like turquoise or lime green can transform the look of your home.
  • Consider upgrading your flower beds with some colorful annuals. Plant in bunches closer to the entryway to maximize the visual impact. Add a fresh layer of mulch to make the beds stand out.
  • Flank both sides of your exterior entryway with a decorative planter. Tips for adding plants: use a “filler” to add bulk, a “spiller” to trail down and a “thriller” to add some height.
  • Place a new decorative doormat outside to greet your guests in style.

Often Overlooked Areas

  • Store garbage and recycling cans in the garage or out of sight, if possible.
  • Make sure exterior lights and fixtures are in good working order. Potential buyers love to see how a home shines at night!
